Inventory financing funds the purchase of stock, with the goods usually pledged as collateral and repaid as they sell or on a schedule. Rockbank Capital Group, a small-business funding broker in Cookeville, Tennessee, explains how it works, what a UCC filing on inventory means, floor plan financing, and how it compares with a credit line for Putnam County retailers.
| Pays for | Shelf goods paid for ahead of the register |
|---|---|
| Collateral | Usually the inventory itself |
| Repaid | Per item sold, or on a fixed calendar |
| Fits | Goods with a track record of selling |
| Who decides | The lending partner |
Why inventory matters so much in Putnam County, TN
Retail trade had more employer establishments than any other sector in Putnam County in 2023: 359 stores employing 5,492 people with $196.0 million in annual payroll (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). The county's wholesalers numbered 81 employer establishments on top of that. Another 646 retail businesses had no employees at all in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024); that count comes from a different program and year and is not added to the employer figure.
Every one of those businesses buys goods before it sells them. When the purchase is large relative to the till, the timing becomes a financing question.
How inventory financing works
A partner advances money to buy stock, or pays the supplier directly. The stock is pledged as collateral. You repay either on a fixed schedule or as specific items sell, depending on the structure. Partners typically advance less than the stock's cost, because goods sold in a hurry rarely fetch full price.
Before agreeing, ask what share of the purchase the partner covers, how often you must report stock levels, and what happens to unsold goods at the end of the term.
The UCC filing on your stock
To secure its claim, the partner usually files a UCC financing statement naming the inventory as collateral. That filing is public and tells other lenders the stock is already pledged. It can make later borrowing against the same goods difficult until the first debt is repaid and the filing ended.
Floor plan financing, explained
Floor plan financing is a type of inventory financing used for high-value, serial-numbered goods such as equipment, boats or vehicles held for sale. Each unit is financed individually and repaid when that unit sells. The partner may inspect the lot to count units. Most Putnam County shops selling smaller goods use a general inventory structure instead.
Stock financing against a credit line and working capital
| Inventory financing | Line of credit | Working capital | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Secured by | The stock | Depends; a blanket lien is common | Varies |
| Spending | Stock only | Any business cost | Any business cost |
| Suits | Large, planned purchases | Repeated smaller buys | A single dated shortfall |
A line of credit is more flexible when purchases are frequent and modest. Inventory financing earns its place when one order is large and the goods have a sales history the partner can see.
How to finance inventory sensibly
- Pull last year's sales by product line and identify what sold through quickly.
- Order against that record, not against hope.
- Match the repayment schedule to the selling window for those goods.
- Keep a cushion for goods that sell slower than planned.
- Avoid stacking inventory debt on top of a merchant cash advance that already collects daily.
A partner will want stock records, supplier invoices and bank statements; how a request moves explains when each is asked for.
Inventory financing for small business, close to home
In ZIP 38501, retail led all sectors with 266 employer establishments in 2023, 39.1 percent of them with fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023). A store that size usually has one buyer, one bank account and no slack for a delayed shipment. More on the local business mix is on the Putnam County overview, the retail section of the sector overview covers shops and distributors, and all six structures are compared on one page.
