This startup business loan calculator returns the monthly payment, total interest and total repaid for an amount, annual rate and term you enter. Rockbank Capital Group, a small-business funding broker in Cookeville, Tennessee, provides it for new Putnam County businesses testing a plan. Real terms come only from lending partners, which decide every request.
What to enter
- Amount: the sum you would borrow, after any cash you are putting in yourself.
- Annual rate: a rate from an offer you hold, or one you want to test.
- Term: how many monthly installments you plan to make.
The calculator assumes equal monthly payments on a fully amortizing loan: no balloon, no fees, no variable rate.
Check the arithmetic first
Enter a rate of zero to see the mechanics. A hypothetical $24,000 over 48 months at a zero rate gives a payment of $500, total interest of $0 and a total repaid of $24,000. Any positive rate raises the payment and adds interest; the gap between total repaid and the amount is the cost of borrowing.
Outside this calculator's scope
Origination or other fees, balloon payments, variable rates, weekly or daily payment schedules, and the cost of an advance priced with a factor rate are all outside it. For fees, add them to the total repaid by hand. For a remaining balance after some payments, or the interest saved by paying early, work from the lender's amortization schedule; our post on paying a loan off early shows how.
How a business loan works for a new business
Startups have no trading history for a partner to read, so the request leans on other things: the owner's personal credit, experience in the trade, cash the owner is putting in, and a plan with realistic numbers. Many partners set a minimum time in business for unsecured structures, which is why new businesses often start with equipment financing, where the item secures the payments.
A useful test with this calculator: take the payment it returns and compare it with the business's expected monthly cash in its slowest early months, not its hoped-for average. If the payment only fits a good month, shorten the plan, raise the cash you put in, or borrow less.
Can you get a small business loan for a brand-new business?
Sometimes, but not on the strength of the idea alone. No one can promise an approval for a startup, and partners decline many. Equipment financing and a term loan backed by collateral or a guarantee are the usual routes once a plan is solid.
Why Putnam County, TN owners test the numbers first
Putnam County had 7,208 businesses with no employees in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024), and 45.7 percent of its 1,988 employers had fewer than five people in 2023 (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Most new businesses here start small, and a payment that looks modest on paper can take a large bite out of a small firm's month.
